How Does Sclerotherapy Work?
Sclerotherapy is a very small injection that works to eliminate small varicose veins and spider veins. The solution, or foam irritates the cells that form the wall of the vein, causing it to spasm.
When the vein collapses, the blood moving through it will clot, blocking anything from passing through. As a result, the diseased vein turns into scar tissue that becomes metabolized by the body.
When is Sclerotherapy the Right Option?
Sclerotherapy is best suited for spider veins and smaller varicose veins. During a consultation with Dr. Allen, you can learn more about the treatment options available to you. By discussing the medical and cosmetic concerns you are experiencing, Dr. Allen can suggest the method that will produce the most beneficial results.
After examining the size, amount and location of your veins, Dr. Allen and his team will design a treatment plan that addresses the issues you are facing. At times, more than one treatment option may be necessary to treat your veins completely. If your veins meet the necessary qualifications, sclerotherapy may be the best treatment option.
What Happens During Sclerotherapy Treatment?
Your sclerotherapy session will take place at the Center for Advanced Vein Therapy. Dr. Allen will disinfect the treatment area and, afterward, gently insert a tiny needle with the sclerosing agent into the affected vein.
Within a matter of seconds, sclerotherapy will cause the vein to collapse, and Dr. Allen will expedite the procedure by adding pressure to the treated vein. Over time, as blood begins to move through healthier veins, your varicose or spider veins will disappear completely.
The treatment itself takes only 30 minutes to complete, depending on the specific parameters of your veins.
Once complete, Dr. Allen will massage the treatment area to help disperse the sclerosing agent. You may experience some tenderness at the injection site, but any side effects will disappear in a matter of hours. Dr. Allen will prescribe you a compression garment to maintain pressure as you recover from your sclerotherapy treatment.
Immediately after your procedure, you will experience very little downtime. You are encouraged to take frequent walks so as to ensure proper blood flow throughout your body. Although sclerotherapy will work to permanently eliminate varicose veins and spider veins, you may require several treatment sessions before you see full results.
Sclerotherapy is one of the most effective treatment methods for spider veins and varicose veins that are currently in your body, but the procedure will not prevent new veins from appearing in the future.
